Finals, Game 4 - Sweep!

Congratulations to Justin P who, with a 12-4 win over the Blackbirds, wins the Owners Appreciation Tournament.  Oscar Charleston (HR), King Kelly (2 2B), and Wade Boggs (3 RBI) provided much of the offense to secure the win.

Finals, Game 3

It looks like luck has run out for Niagara.  A pinch hit 3-run home run put the game out of reach and gave Spanish Harlem a 6-2 win.  Starter Monty Stratton gave up just 4 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned, in his 8 innings of work.  Game 4 is tonight where Niagara hopes to keep the series going one more day.

Finals, Game 2

Spanish Harlem wins 6-4 and takes a 2-0 series lead over Niagara.  Oscar Charleston continued his rampage, doubling twice with an RBI while teammates Cupid Childs and King Kelly recorded 3 hits a piece.

Game 3 will still be held tonight, after 8 PM.

Finals, Game 1

The Beaters capture game 1 with a 10-2 thrashing of the Blackbirds.  Oscar Charleston went nuts, blasting 3 home runs and driving in 6.  Magglio Ordonez and Wade Boggs added home runs of their own while Jesse Tannehill went to 5-2 with a 5 hit, complete game win.

On to the Finals

  • Bill Bernhard pitched into the 11th, giving up 10 hits and only 1 run, vaulting his Spanish Harlem Pinata Beaters to the Finals with 2-1 victory over Lusitania.  John Olerud won the series after slamming a first pitch fastball deep into the left field bleachers.  Spanish Harlem wins the series 4-2.
  • Facing the Beaters will be the Niagara Frontier Blackbirds who blasted the NY Blues 9-3.    Duke Snider, Josh Gibson, and Dave Concepcion homered in the win,
Will the beaters, recently ranked 2nd all time in a recent 100 resim competition, be able to best the last seeded Blackbirds?  

Game 1 of the finals starts tomorrow.

Semifinals Game 5


  • The Blue's stay alive, playing small ball in a 3-2 extra inning win over the Blackbirds.  A walk, a single, and a Al Rosen sac fly won the game in the 10th for Niagara.  Jack Pfiester didn't factor in the decision, but pitched well giving up 7 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings. Niagara leads the series 3-2.
  • Spanish Harlem wins their 2nd straight, scoring all 6 of their runs in the 7th and 8th innings in a 5 run win over Lusitania.  Travis Hafner and Wade Boggs homered while Jesse Tannehill moved to 4-2 in the tournament with a fine 8 hit, 1 run, complete game.  Spanish Harlem leads 3 games to 2.

Semifinals Game 4 - One on the brink, another tied at 2-2


  • Van frickin Mungo tossed a 5 hit shutout tonight, winning 4-0 for his Blackbirds.  Niagara now owns a 3-1 series lead over the Blues and is one win away from advancing to the finals.  Mel Ott was a one man wrecking crew, slamming 2 home runs and driving in all 4 runners.
  • The Pinata Beaters tie the series at 2-all with a 2-1 nail biter victory over the Death Speakers.  Ed Siever  and Jeff Zimmerman combined to hold Lusitania to just 3 hits while doubles and Oscar Charleston single drove in 2 in the third, proving to be the game winner.

Semifinals - Game 3's


  • The Blackbirds topple the Blues 7-3.  Josh Gibson led the way with 3 hits, 3 RBI, and a home run and Wally Berger chipped in with a dinger of his own.  Bill Swift moved to 3-0, picking up the win after a 5 hit, 3 run, 7 inning performance.  The Blackbirds lead 2-1.
  • With a 10 run explosion in the first, the Death Speakers took game 3 from Spanish Harlem, 13-4.  It took 6 hits, 4 walks, and error, and a Bill Terry 3 run homer.  Coupled with a fine start from Bill Bernhard, the Death Speakers lead 2 games to 1.

Round 3 Game 7's - The Dark Horses Emerge

Alexander Cartwright Bracket

  • They've done it, everyone's favorite underdog has advanced to the semi's with a 4-3 victory over Brighton.  It was an exciting 11 inning contest, one in which the Blackbirds Tim Burke coughed up the lead in the bottom of the 9th, but ultimately pitched 4 innings to redeem himself and capture the win.  Nap Lajoie had 3 hits, including the game winner, and Duke Snider 2 triples.

  • With a 2-1 victory, the NY Blues, another underdog, will face off against the Blackbirds in the semi's.  Ron Guidry was masterful, holding Newark to 7 hits over 9 innings, and picking up 6 K's.  The Blues scored in the 4th and 7th on solo shots from Mickey Mantle and Sammy Sosa.

Round 3 Game 6,

Alexander Cartwright Bracket

  • With a 4-2 win, Danny Haren and the Shadows force a Game 7 with the Blackbirds.  Haren went 8 strong giving up 5 hits against 8 K's, and has moved to 3-0 in the tournament with a 2.74 ERA.   Lou Gehrig homered and drove in 2.  Tomorrow, Bill Swift (2-0, 3.91) will take the mound for the visiting Blackbirds and he'll square off against Dizzy Dean (1-1, 5.89)

  • The Slam Dumps have come back from a 3-0 series deficit to force a game 7.  Today's game was a pure slugfest, with Newark coming out on top by a score of 15-11.  Johnny Mize homered and drove in 6 while the top of the Newark lineup collected 14 hits, 4 by Red Schoendeinst.  Ron Guidry (3-2, 3.41) starts tomorrow for NY while Bill Bernhard (4-1, 2.57) gets the start at home for Newark.
Branch Rickey Bracket
  • The Death Speakers advance to the semi-finals, besting the John McDonald in 6 games.  Their 4-3 victory was their third consecutive.  Fanclub jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, but Lusitinia clawed tehir way back with runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 7th innings.  A Magglio Ordonez run scoring ground out proved to be the game winner.  Lusitania moves on to face the Pinata Beaters.
