Negro League Data Issue

All

The League Average Data for negro league batters and pitchers listed on the eligibility files was incorrect.  This impacts maybe 10% of us, but is a major impact to those 10%.

Please re-download the files if you have been using them, the data has been fixed.

The 500 resims are fine and so is the real life data, just these 3 columns have changed.

Database Cleanup, the Wild Pitch, and the IBB

Each year I take some time to clean-up our database.  The past few years defense and basic stats have been checked against baseball-rerefence for accuracy and adjusted where necessary.

This year I am going through the same exercise, but for the first time including Information Only stats.  These are stats that are not strictly required to enter a player into the game, they include:

• For Batters: R, RBI, SH
• For Pitchers: W, L, Sv, G, GS, CG, ShO, R, GF

Here are the critical errors found this off season.  There were many more (hundreds) of corrections on the information only stats, and a handful of additional minor corrections to the required stats.  These were minor enough (AB here, one triple there, 1/3 of an inning, etc) that they will not have in impact on player valuation and I didn't list them out.

Major Batter Corrections

Intentional Walks
Throughout league history I have completely ignored the IBB mainly because baseball-reference never included the stat on it's main player pages.  However, a few years ago they altered their page layout and made room for it, making it a lot easier for me during data entry.   Until now, I let DMB self-estimate the IBB based upon pitcher walk rate and era.  This will change going forward and I made retroactive updates to virtually every player.

This may impact certain relievers significantly.  Jim Brewer, for instance, walked 25 batters in 78 innings.  DMB estimated that 4 of those walks (16%) were intentional.  In truth, Brewer intentionally walked 11 batters (44%) and I expect this would have a measurable impact to how Brewer performs.  The impact should be fewer non intentional walks.

Wild Pitch Changes
Wild Pitches have historical been one of the "Informational Only" stats in our league.  This upcoming year, however, I decided to implement the Wild Pitch rating system DMB employs:

This number indicates how often a pitcher throws a wild pitch when there are runners on base. The wild pitch rating tends to range from 0 to 60 with an average of 15. Use the formula:

  rating = (wild pitches * 1000) / (batters faced * .43)

For example, if a pitcher threw four wild pitches in a season in which he faced 1000 batters, his rating is 9. Why .43? Because about 43% percentage of batters faced occur with runners on base, though this number rises and falls over time and will vary for individual pitchers.

While mostly relievers, there are a few great pitchers on that list nonetheless.  If I am interpreting the formula correctly, this means that Bruce Ruffin will throw 80 passed balls for every 1000 times he pitches WITH RUNNERS ON BASE.

I don't expect the need for draft strategy changes, we are talking wild pitches now occurring between .01% and .08% of the time with runners on base instead of virtually never.

• Ack.  Found the season disk that proved Grffey was in fax an Ex range defender.  Officially Ex in every year and Ex/54 in 1993.

• Pitchers Range and Error rates will be updated as I see mistakes.  These ratings have never been entirely accurate, as studies have shown DMB doesn't really pay much attention to them.  Especially the ranges. I am not going to post every correction in this thread.

• 1930 Wood English has a 68 error rating at SS, not 8

• 1913 Miller Huggins is now Vg/58 instead of Vg/500
• 2008 and 2010 Josh Hamilton OF Arm now Ex instead of Av

Ben Sanders Gaffe

All - apologies.  Looks like I neglected to reset Ben Sanders.  He stinks too.  The file in the original post has been updated.

Baldwin, Titcomb wrecked; Dunlap emerges as star

With the potential of league altering changes as a result tinkering with the 1800s player set I decided it was only fair to run and publish some tests.  I cannot imagine having the #2 pick overall only to choose, for example, a version of Ross Barnes that is terrible.

To do this equitably, I only chose players from last season that had regular playing time, replaced them with the new and improved version, and ran 20 sims.   This is not a 100 resim type of  exercise that would baseline players in a neutral environment.  It is a resim of last season, ripe with differing park factors, great or bad defense, and an unbalanced schedule.  This exercise merely gives you a means to compare last seasons 20 sim results to a new data point, nothing more.

Many changes are off the charts, others will go unnoticed.  Overall though, folks that were displeased the 1800s player set was ever created will undoubtedly rejoice as expectations will now be tempered across the board.  More than twice as many players saw a decreases in OPS or ERA rather than an increase (26 vs 12, with 4 unchanged).

Notes:
- Keep in mind I updated the entire 1800s set, not just the players listed below.
- 20 sims is not nearly enough to prove anything.  It's about 1/5th the at bats (or innings) generally considered necessary to peg a players true average stat line.  Use your judgement

Batters
Fred Dunlap is now a star.  I feel a bit vindicated here, since Dunlap has always ended up very high on my draft board but the DMB game engine always disagreed with me.  With Vg/111 defense and a .900+ OPS at second base, Dunlap is now a legit Top-10 pick.    However, keep in mind what I said earlier regarding ballparks - last season Dunlap did play in an extreme hitters park so these totals are assuredly inflated.

Cupid Childs, Ed Delahanty, Roger Connor, Ross Barnes, and George Wright all improved.  Of interest among these few is the fact Childs increase his ability to hit singles making him a .300 batter and Delahanty had marginal improvements just about everywhere.

As mentioned, not everyone fared so well. Ed McKean took the biggest hit dropping from a .696 OPS to .551.  I hadn't heard of him either, so not sure it matters.  What does matter is some of the following names: Mike Tiernan, George Hall, Hughie Jennings, Fred Carroll, Candy Nelson, King Kelly (no!!!!!), Pete Browning, and Ed Swartwood all saw drops in results that are enough to impact the draft.  Most lost 20-30 OPS points but Hall and Tiernan lost over 50.

All other batters stayed relatively the same.  Big Names such as Hugh Duffy, John McGraw, Dan Brouthers, and Willie Keeler appear not to be impacted.   Of those big names - Keeler and Jennings each lost about 15 points in batting average and their OBP's took a corresponding hit.

Pitchers
Toss those draft boards away!  It's time to start anew as Cannonball Titcomb and Lady Baldwin have been wrecked.  I say good riddance, they never should have been great in the first place.  Baldwin went from a 3.44 ERA/1.27 WHIP to 5.03/1.61.  Titcomb even worse - 3.54/1.29 to 5.37/1.73.  Elsewhere, Pete Conway and Charlie Buffinton appeared to be set for rotation slots this season but each struggled, especially Conway who ended up with an ERA north of 5.00.

Just about every one else struggled too.  Tim Keefe, Scott Stratton, Henry Boyle, Silver King, and Charlie Sweeney still are draftable, but experience 15-35% increases to their ERA's.

There were few bright spots.  Bert Dorr and Kid Nichols had reputable ERA's around 4.25 but the big news is Ben Sanders and Joe Neale.  Both we already considered upper tier pitchers, and both improved especially Neale.  Neal's WHIP went from 1.15 to 0.94.

Overall, these changes are an obvious positive.  First and foremost, we strive for accuracy.  The more accurate the data, the better the league.  Secondly, intuitively we all knew the 1800s players were better than we expected.  We lived with it because it was fun to have new greats to draft in the first few rounds, but nobody really believed Lady Baldwin was that good.  Turns out he's not, and that's ok.

League Era Correction

While I was spending time correcting the park factors for the 1800s players, I thought I might as well spend time correcting the 'eras' too.  In DMB speak, an era is the league totals for that specfic year.  Errors in the era (ha) will impact how much better or worse than average the computer thinks a player is.

There was  on error, but looking at the player impacted I don't think it will make much of a difference.

Solving the 1800s Dillema

Earlier today I sent an email to league owners announcing the ability to request a reset on certain players.  The reset covered every era, but in reality, most issues we have encountered were from the relatively new 1800s player sets.

I was digging into the issue (again) and discovered what likely is a critical flaw for certain players.  The ballpark.  For players from 1901 through today, DMB provides a ball park database that is used when entering new players into the game.  Prior to 1901 users are left to fend for themselves so I turned to baseball-reference.com and used their ball park data.

As most know, DMB provides ball park data splits for singles, doubles, triples, and homeruns for both lefties and righties.  Baseball-Reference provides one consolidated number.  In a moment of apparent stupidity, I simply used the b-r.com number without attempting to convert to DMB language.

For example, 1888 West Side park  has a baseball-reference.com ballpark factor of 107.  While entering this into DMB, I used 107 for the singles, doubles, triples, and homer run rate.  Had I thought for more than a second, I would have realized if one increases singles, doubles, triples, and home runs across the board by 7%, overall scoring would increase a heck of a lot more than 7% - the number that b-r.com's factor implies.

In the coming days I am going to reset every 1800s player using valid looking park factors.  I propose to use examples of what the park could have look like by utilizing real life dmb park factors from the early 1900s that match with the B-R.com values.

For instance, if B-R.com has 104 and I find a real life dmb park of 105 / 95 / 100 / 102 that also has a B-R.com factor of 104 I'll use the DMB values.

All of this will be published as well.  The good news is that most players already played in parks that were close to neutral and their impact would be minimal.

Pitcher Iron Men Rules Update

The qualification for Pitcher Iron Men has been updated.  7% was just too few to make a difference; the era's were adjusted so that about 15% of the starting pitchers are now iron men.

Rules (below) are convoluded but remember, the pitcher file in excel will just simply list if the player is an Iron Man or not.  You really only need these rules if you plan on doing your own calculations.

Player Corrections

Several corrections have been identified by owners. The first one is extremely widespread but relatively minor. Over 1/2 the pitchers in the database have minor intentional walk errors. 99% of these are minor and will not impact game play - one to five intentional walks in either direction.

Frankly, I have no explanation as to why this occurred though. I can't wrap my arms around the fact that 80 pitchers in ATB XIII have no stat errors other than this quirky IBB issue. A few possibilities come to mind:

• I typed them in all wrong. I have a difficult time believing this. Not because of the volume of errors, but the fact they were only on IBBs makes this implausible.
• There was a migration error when upgrading the software to DMB 10. Also unlikely since I have heard no complaints on the forums.
• Baseball reference changed their IBB stats in the past few years and I never noticed.

I am not going to list all 85 pitcher updates. But there were a few fairly significant ones I should mention:

1972 Jim Brewer: was 3, now 11

2002 Chris Hammond, was 3, now 9

1995 Hideo Nomo, was 9, now 2

1971 Vida Blue, was 10, now 3

A few other errors have been spotted as well:

1888 Buck Ewing loses a triple, now at 15

1890 Joe Neales loses 73 BPF, now at 276

1946 Aaron Robinson now has 330 AB's, losing 51

1971 Wilbur Wood loses 9 BPF, now at 1316

1983 Kent Tekulve loses 100 BPF, now at 398

2000 Mike Myers loses 117 BPF, now at 177

2007 Andy Petttitte loses 71 BPF, now at 916

1889 AA Long and Tucker Errors

Somehow, Sean S noticed that 1889 Herman Long and 1889 Tommy Tucker literally never walked. Turns out in over 1300 AB's over the past few years, Long and Tucker not only failed to walk one time, they failed to strikeout too.

Their raw stats ended up being spot on, which is likely why no one caught it before hand. It turned out the underlying era for these two players was corrupt, causing players from 1889 AA to have this issue. Luckily, these were the only two chosen by owners in the past.

In order to prove to myself it was the era, I had to run a quick simulation after correcting. Using last years ATB XII database and existing lineups I ran one sim to see if the problem was fixed.

Long: 33 BB and 62 K in 433 AB (.226 / /.281 / .263)

Tucker: 11 BB and 12 K in 93 AB (.344 / .442 / .419)

Tucker has always been a decent backup, he might now be a viable starter at first base. The shortstop long continues to be awful.

ATB XIII Corrections

During this off season I have decided to do a thorough double check the data entry over the past few years. I will update this post will the pertinent corrections.

1) First up is a general statement. For all player seasons 2005 through current, DMB did not provide true park or era data. Instead, I had to create my own era and parks based upon data found in baseball reference.

DMB has recently created an updated park disk, that updates this information through 2009. I have refreshed all player data from 2005-2009 (120 players) to utilize this new information.

I do not expect any appreciable changes in performance, but didn't want to hold back this information. Still wondering why Mariano Rivera is so streaky, maybe this will solve it!

1800s Batter Corrections

• 1886 Cap Anson loses 55 AB and 9 H R. He was batting .335 / .395 / .538 and is now batting .371 / .434 / .544
• 1886 Jack Glasscock gains 10 2B; slugging increases from .375 to .432
• 1887 Tip O'Neill loses 9 BB; on base goes from .494 to .486
• 1887 Sam Wise loses 43 AB. His old slash line was .306 / .357 / .478 and it is now .334 / .387 / .522
• 1891 Jack Clements gains 10 2B; his slugging went from .400 to .426
• 1894 Joe Kelley gains 20 2B; his slugging jumps from .562 to .602

1900-1929 Batter Corrections

• 1925 Al Wingo loses 9 triples; his slugging drops from .568 to .527
• 1928 Heinie Manush loses 9 triples; his slugging drops from .603 to .575

1930-1970 Batter Corrections

• 1930 Babe Herman loses 11 walks; on base percentage drops from .460 to .451
• 1930 Woody English gains 20 doubles; slugging increases from .427 to .511
• 1956 Harvey Kuenn loses 223 walks!; on base drops from .542 to .367

1970-2000 Batter Corrections

• 1974 Mike Schmidt gains 30 hits; AVG jumps from .229 to .282, I am sure he'll still suck though.
• 1975 Ted Simmons gains 11 2B; SLG jumps from .472 to .491
• 1984 Eddie Murray loses 90 walks; OBP plummets from .477 to .410
• 1995 Tim Salmon loses 40 AB; slash line jumps from .307 / .404 / .553 to .330 / .429 / .594
• 1997 Charles Johnson loses 68 AB; slash line rockets from .215 / .304 / .390 to .250 / .347 / .454

2000s Batter Corrections

• 2000 Richard Hidalgo lost 30 AB; his rate stats go from .298 / .374 / .604 to .314 / .391 / .636
• 2000 Todd Helton gains 20 2B increasing his slugging from .595 to .630

Pitchers looked much cleaner, it must be easier to input them I guess.

• Earl Moore 1903 jumps 100 IP to 247.7
• Shane Reynolds 1996 have his walks worsen from 5 to 44
• Doug Brocail 1999 have his K's jump from 25 to 78
• Frankie Rodriguez 2008 now has 4 HR's against instead of 0

There were a multitude of other corrections for batters and pitchers, but these were irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. A third of an IP here, or an extra single there, etc.
