Can we have a restart?  Or maybe realign the divisions?

DC Chips vs. John McDonald Fanclub: A History

by Steve C, Washington

This season marks the fourth time that DCC and JMF have been division rivals.

Both clubs premiered in ATB X.  That year, DCC took the Walter Alston Division over second place JMF (113 wins vs. 95).

The very next season, in ATB XI, JMF got its revenge in the It Might Be Gone Division.  JMF won the division with 109 wins while DCC finished second with 88.

In light of a nasty bench-clearing brawl late in ATB XI, Lou made an executive decision to place the teams in different divisions for ATB XII.

By popular demand, however, DCC and JMF squared off again in the American Division of ATB XIII.  Unfortunately, this highly anticipated rematch was spoiled by the Gold Coast Gossamers, who inconveniently ran away with the division.

Sadly, in ATB XIV and XV, the two rivals were again separated.

But, as nature intended, this season finds them both in the AL West.

After twenty games, DCC and JMF are separated by a mere half game.  They are trying to hold off promising clubs fielded by the Brews and Stuffers.

So, we’ll see what unfolds over the next 140 games.

Good luck Jason!

The Good, the Great, and the Ugly - Week 1

Week 1 Standings Summary

The big story in week 1 has been the rash of injuries that has plagued so many teams.  The volume of injuries seemed to be a bit anomalous and several owners have had to deal with 2 week injuries to quality players.  Remember, this is a weekly lineup league, but you are allowed daily lineup changes to cover any injuries.

And here is a reminder of the weekly process for owners:

WEEKLY SCHEDULE
- 15 Days Simulated Per Week over the course of 12 Weeks
* Sunday - Lineups and Free Agents Due 8 PM+ 3 Days Run
* Monday - Thursday - 3 Days Run per night
* FA Requests for the next week are due Fridays, 5 AM.
* Waiver process will be run by me on Friday.
* By Friday midnight I will let owners know if they got the players in question
* Cycle starts again, lineups due Sunday, 8 PM

The American League features our two new franchises - the Tampa Bay Muffin Stuffers and NY Mammoths.  The Stuffers are struggling, but the Mammoths own the best record in the league in large part thanks to Manny Ramirez.  The team as a whole is batting just .210 / .282 / .349 but Ramirez has jumped out to a hot start batting .391 with 5 HR and 9 RBI already.  Couple that with a team ERA of 2.73 and it's easy to see why they're 9-5.  David Price leads their staff with a 3-0 record and a minuscule 1.57 ERA.

It's early yet one can't but help wonder if the Shadows are going to run away with the NL East, and perhaps the entire NL.  At 9-4 they own ATB's best record and more importantly, with a 21 run Differential, they're 60% better than the next best mark.

Third Basemen Dick Allen already has 16 runs batted in and Norm Cash is sporting a 1.070 OPS.  "Big Ed" Walsh is doing his David Price impression:  3-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

Terrible Team Base Running

This sickens me!  Be sure and check your managerial and player tendencies to prevent you're bone headed players from running your team out of contention.

After just 6 games I have 9 Caught Steals, Pick-Offs, and Runners Thrown Out.  Crimeny.  Here is a chart for the whole league.

Opening Day Matchups

(Re-posted with correct match-ups.  Accidentally used the exhibition schedule yesterday!)

Lineups are coming in and there are a few more exhibitions to run, but opening day doesn't start until Sunday night, February 15th.  A bad pre-season is meaningless, a good pre-season is not only meaningless, but may instill unwarranted complacency in an owner.

Here are some select pre-season records from last year and the teams corresponding win totals in the regular season:

Steve C.  17-7; 80-82
Brad P... 15-8; 82-80
Joe T.... 12-6; 79-83

Lou P.... 10-13; 104-58
Sean S... 6-12; 98-64

Hafner shipped to Otherton for Ron Reed

Brighton found their team for Travis Hafner, shipping the 13rd rounder to Otherton for 22nd rounder Ron Reed.

No word yet from Brian B what he plans to do with Hafner, especially considering he already has a full time DH in Edgar Martinez.

Rule Clarification - Pitchers In the Batting Lineup

I need to add a new rule to our rule book.  Pitchers are allowed to be used as pinch hitters but they cannot be inserted into the batting lineup unless they have enough at bats to be qualified as a batter.  I don't know if there are any instances of this, but I would bet some 1800s pitchers may qualify as batters.

For instance, 1886 Bob Caruthers can hit a ton (201 OPS+).  You cannot draft him as a pitcher and then insert him into the lineup as a regular or part time batter.  However, he can be used for  pinch hitting duties if you want to risk injuries on the base baths.

This may sound like a good idea, but keep in mind if you have him as an active pitcher the computer AI will undoubtedly find a way to use him from time to time.  He does not sim well as a  pitcher (5.81 ERA, 1.57 WHIP with Rusty Kuntz last year) and one will have to weigh the risk.

Personally, i think it is probably worth it for a batting line of .334 / .448 / .527.  The following year in '97 he batted .357 / .463 / .547, albeit in more of a hitters park.

Earlier in the draft someone asked me if pitchers can hit.  I said yes, but I needed to qualify to close the loophole mentioned above.
