We have several items of interest to discuss with Matt B’s Carlisle “Mechanics”.
1) Tris Speaker rode the pine in the resims. I am not sure if it was my error, Matt’s error, or some combination of both; regardless, Tris Speaker went to the plate just 107 times each season. Replacing him was Elmer Flick and his slash line of .230 / .277 / .336, a far cry from Speaker’s .313 / .392 / .398.
2) I re-ran some test resims to see the impact of Speaker. Not surprisingly, this was a markedly improved team with their star center fielder in the lineup 162 times. With the change, the “Mechanics” averaged 86 wins per season which would equate to a 20 Resim ranking of 7th, three slots better.
3) Red Ryan! Love this guy. The Negro League reliever led the team in Innings Pitched, ERA, WHIP, Wins, Games, and was second in saves. His final line – all in relief – 211 IP, 159 H, 28 K, 74 BB, 2.35 ERA, 0.89 WHIP.
4) Dutch Leonard (see below), interested to see how he fares next year
Overall, the pitching staff averaged a 3.65 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, yielding the 5th best Runs Against mark in ATB. It was definitively good enough to win.
The lineup becomes fairly deep with Speaker’s presence. Jimmy Foxx roped 39 home runs per season; second on the team was third basemen Al Rosen who slammed 31. George Hall can arguably be considered better the Foxx, the DH hit .284 / .342 / .459 with 20 doubles, 25 triples, and 14 home runs per season.
Carlisle made the playoffs about 1/3 of the time without Speaker, and we can probably assume a mark closer to 50% with him. This was a good effort from owner Matt B that comfortably puts the squad in the “Tier 2” teams, behind some of the 90 win juggernauts that are to come.
800 OPS Batters:
.800 – Jimmie Foxx
.800 – George Hall
Sub 4.00 ERA Starters
3.98 – Rube Waddell
3.54 – Dutch Leonard
Sub 3.25 ERA Relievers
2.35 – Red Ryan
2.86 – Joaquin Benoit
3.18 – Dale Murray
3.18 – Darren O’Day
Best Value Draft Pick
Rd 12 – Dutch Leonard (150 IP, 129 H, 3.54 ERA, 1.22 WHIP). Impressive. In the 500 resims Leonard went 4.10 and 1.27 with an average defense behind him. He is a legit starter.
Bust Draft Pick
Rd 6 – Cal Ripken. Not awful “for a shortstop” but still too early for resulting slash line of .227 / .279 / .374.

Yeah I definitely did not mean to bench my #1 pick! Dang injury at the end of the year, I forgot when I told you that my "latest" lineup was a Speaker injury one! Oh well, thanks for the re-check with Speaker in there!
