It's August 16th in ATB land and past time to take a look at the playoff picture.
The American League East is the most dominant division in baseball, boasting teams that own 3 of the top 4 run differential in ATB. Unfortunately, one of these teams will have to miss the playoffs.
With a 4 game winning streak, the Willets Point "Mechanics" have opened a 7 game lead for the division title. Barring a historic meltdown, it's safe to assume they claim the division crown. The leaves the wild card race for 63-48 Spanish Harlem Pinata Beaters and the 63-50 Oasis Gunters. Both teams are of high quality, though the Beaters may have the edge thanks to a 7-3 head to head record.
Hudson MadBum is still in the wild card race at 5.5 games back, but their run differential suggests they're a longshot.
The remaining AL divisional races are each in hand with the Ankhana Adventures up by 10 games over MadBum and the Dharma Islanders up by 6 over the fading Denver RoidBoyz.
In all, six of the twelve teams are in the hunt.
Though six teams in The National League are vying for the playoffs as well, the division make-up makes it potentially more exciting. Each divisional race is seperated by two games or less putting great emphasis on the divisional crown.
So far this week, two divisional races have had lead changes, with the Grumman Hellcats and Sparta Hoplites overtaking the Galaxy Guardians and Flin Flon Arctic Foxes respectively. However, in the West, the heavily favored Lakeview Zeros (thanks to some nifty trades) have failed to overcome the Shamokin Miners. On paper Lakeview is the better team, doubling the Miners run differential, but as all know, the games still need to be played.
Two of the divisional runner ups will be sent home as there's just one wild card up for grabs.
Assuming the Adventurers, "Mechanics", and Islanders move on to the playoffs, here is a quick look at the strenght of schedule for each of the other contenders.
