That is in the middle of Sim 9A, so for our purposes the deadline is really the end of Week 8.

Vern Law - the Next Top 10 Pitcher?
1960 World Series - Game 7: NY Yankees v Pittsburgh Pirates |
That was enough for owners to stay away in ATB 15, but Sean S's Sparta Hoplites took a mid-round gamble the following season selecting him in the 16th round. It paid off. In decisive hitters park Law had 13 Wins with a 3.91 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.
Sean was on to something and Justin P knew it, selecting Law in the 12th round the following season. He continued to impress, this time with a 12 Wins, a 3.52 ERA, and a tidy 1.13 WHIP
Unfortunately ATB 18 is lost to me, but at the All Star Break I saw a blog post where he had 5 wins and a 2.95 ERA. That season Mike S drafted him 12th, I hope it ended well for him.
Which brings us to Jason B's Otterville Valley success in ATB 19. Law is on fire: 11-0, 1.36 ERA, 99 IP, 89 H, 21 BB, 1.11 WHIP, 2.23 RCERA. He leads ATB in both complete games and shutouts.
Drafted in the 14th, the former Pirate is the steal of the draft so far.

Braxton Faces the Minimum
What a night for Garland Braxton. The ace of the Manetheren Red Eagles has struggled at times this year, giving up 4 runs or more in 8 of his 12 starts. Tonight he had his best stuff and put a hurtin' on the "Mechanics" of Willets Point.
After yielding a lead-off infield single to the first batter of the game, on a 1-2 pitch to Pete Hill, Braxton induced a double play from the big bat of Dan Brouthers. That was literally all for Willets Point - no other batter would reach base and Braxton would end oh-so-close to perfection.
His final line:
9 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, and a paltry 80 pitches. He only reached a count with 3 balls once.
The Red Eagles won going away in a 5-run, 13 hit affair

Rose Takes the Helm for Ohio
Ray Kinsella was fired by the Ohio N95ers today. The team (17-29) had lost 7 of its last 8 games prior to his departure. Kinsella said to reporters as he was cleaning out his office, "When Gambz hired me to 'go the distance,' I thanked him, but there is too much ------- pain on this ballclub for any one man to ease."
Pete Rose is the N95ers' new player-manager. "The timing couldn't have been better," he said. "The horse tracks just opened back up yesterday, and I need the extra money."

Extra Base Hit Rates between ATB 18 and 19
Mike N and I had a conversation over email that may be interesting to a wider audience.
Question: Given that the 1906 era changes so much about the game, why do we see errors increasing at incredible rates, but we do not see Home Runs being reduced at expected rates?
Long Winded Answer:
Fielding is binary, ball hit to fielder, fielder gets a "roll of the dice" so to speak, and the outcome is a catch or an error. I assume it is easy to program this. And over a long enough period of the time, the fielding percentages match what is expected for the combination of era and fielder quality.
Increase the error rate in an era, the DMB game engine can simply increase the errors in sim play.
The batting/pitching results are not binary - so much more has to go into the calculation. On every pitch they have to consider the batter/pitcher matchup, the park, the fielding, the dozen or so player ratings, the weather, etc.
What is more important to the game engine - maintaining 70 HR's from Mark McGwire, or the home run rate in the dead ball era? The engine has to thread that fine line - how much does it suppress great hitting from other era's? I don't know how they exactly do this.
Add in the fact that every darn hitter we use is elite (plus every pitcher) and I think the engine just makes a bunch of judgement calls.
I found some old files from ATB 18 to compare certain stats. It is a fair comparison I think, since we are using the same general player population and the only variable is the different eras. Only concern I see is that ATB 19 is only has 5 or 6 weeks of data.
Here are stats on an at bat basis, a HR every X amount of AB type of thing
ATB19 ATB18 % DIff
HR 50 41 -18%
3B 56 171 +67%
2B 50 20 +60%
K 8 6 +25%
To make sure we understand the first line, ATB 19 sees home runs every 50 at bats, while last ATB season, home runs were more prolific, coming at a rate of 1 every 41 at bats.
My unconfirmed conclusion is that the 1906 era is having a profound effect on ATB, but less so for Home Runs than other stats.
As mentioned, I do think throwing only all time greats into a single league can wreak havoc on any era we choose. I also believe this is why some of our all time favorite players just don't stack up well - Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Albert Pujols, etc.

Pete Reiser: 4/ltp.2x2(4);1x1(43)
4/ltp.2x2(4);1x1(43)
I think that is the first time I've noticed "ltp" in the scoresheet section of one of our box scores. For the uninitiated, that stands for Lined into Triple Play. Here's what happened to Pistol Pete on April 27th.
Down by a run to the Spiders, the Zero's looked ready to put up a crooked number in the top half the 7th when a walk and two singles plated a run to tie the game and put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.
Reiser strode the plate and lined the 3-2 offering from Scott Downs directly at the Spiders second basemen, Bret Boone.
The play was arguably a game winner, as the Spiders went on to win by two.

- Boone caught it - 4/ltp.2x2(4);1x1(43)
- Stepped on second catching Bill Terry off the bag - 4/ltp.2x2(4);1x1(43)
- and tossed it to Jack Clark at first before Roberto Clemente made it back to the bag himself - 4/ltp.2x2(4);1x1(43)
The play was arguably a game winner, as the Spiders went on to win by two.

The Tale of Two Walters
By all accounts The Big Train is off to a good start - 54 IP, 24 H, 11 BB, 30 K with opponents batting just .131 against him. Yet somehow the right handed flamethrower is just 3-3 for the Dayton Toppins.
How is this possible you say? This has to be one of the more interesting game logs

- In his 3 wins: 3 Shutouts, 3 1-hitters, 4 BB, 15 K, 0.00 ERA*
- In his 3 losses: 5.13 ERA, 19 IP, 6 BB, 8 K
*Tip o' the cap to Joe V for sending this in: So here is an odd stat......Walter Johnson is 3-3. All three wins are 1-hitters. Two of those he gave up hits in the first inning, and in the last one he had a no-hitter into the 6th.

How Good Is Otter Valley?
With 4 seasons of 90 or more wins, and one amazing 109 victory campaign, Jason B is no stranger to success in ATB. However, Jason's squads were never quite good enough to bring home the overall title. At the risk of a full fledged jinx, ATB 19 may be an entirely different story.
After 9 seasons running the John McDonald Fanclub, this year of overall life change also brought change to the classic JMF moniker - the franchise moved to Otter Valley. The reasons are unclear, but the results are crystal - with the best run differential in the game with a projected win total of 123, Otter Valley is the best team in ATB.
How is he accomplishing this? By bludgeoning opponents into submission. The Otters lead ATB in all the slash categories, plus OPS, Runs Created, Total Bases, and Runs Scored Per Game. How's this for a lineup
1) .284 / .355 / .321 - Tris Speaker, CF
2) .287 / .321 / .412 - Lip Ike, LF
3) .371 / .424 / .567 - Fred Dunlap, 2B
4) .414 / .468 / .596 - Harry Heilmann, DH
5) .386 / .422 / .436 - Buck Leonard, 1B

8) .283 / .353 / .500 - Howard Johnson, 3B
9) .323 / .337 / .376 - Dobie Moore, SS
Their bench is impressive as well, with Charley Jones (.766 OPS), Al Kaline (.767), and Buddy Bell all putting up solid numbers.
I know what you are thinking, many of these players are experiencing career year type of results and there will likely be regression to the mean. Perhaps this is true, but also consider the park factors of 1918 Dunn Field - 110 / 128 / 126 / 40. With a total of only 8 team home runs all year, this team was built for high average and in-park extra base hits and so far it is working.
123 wins? No, but this team is legitimately impressive and could challenge the Franchise Record of 109 wins.
6) .291 / .361 / .400 - Ross Youngs, RF
7) .353 / .397 / .549 - Deacon White, C
8) .283 / .353 / .500 - Howard Johnson, 3B
9) .323 / .337 / .376 - Dobie Moore, SS

Does It Help to Play a Real Life Deadball Player in our 1906 league Era?
Probably Not
These charts categorize each player in terms of the "era" - the deadball era, the steroid era, or any other. Regardless of batting or pitching, players in the deadball era have among the worst results so far this sim.
Main Caveat - they may always have the worst results, I don't have a baseline to compare them too.

Schedule Quirks and Hope
For those owners like me, frustrated at a lackluster start, I have some good news.
- To date 94% of the games we've played are of the intra-divisional variety, games between division rivals
- Yet, over the course of the season 60% of the games are INTER-divisional, games between teams in differing divisions.
- Put the two together, about 65% of our remaining games are against opponents each team has not yet seen.
A lot can change!

Power Alley - Week 1
Reminder:
Power Alley is meaningless, but fun. It takes a teams winning percentage and adjusts it upward or downward depending upon it's Pythagorean Winning Percentage*. The rankings are weighted 60/40 for Pythag vs Actual.
As an added bonus, the Projected Wins take a teams actual wins and adds to that a total derived from the explanation above, played out over the course of the rest of the season.
*Formula is: W%=[(Runs Scored)^1.83]/[(Runs Scored)^1.83 + (Runs Allowed)^1.83]
