Round 2, Game 1s - All But One Favorite Holds Serve

Cartwright

  • Down a run in the bottom of the 9th, the Shadows strung together a walk, single, double, and Sac Fly to score 2 and capture game 1 from the Phighting Philbens
  • The Blackbirds put a crooked 4 on the board in 4th en route to a 6-2 win over the Miners.  Mel Ott homered and drove in two.

Barrow

  • Bobby Doer's 3 hits and Mike Piazza's two ribbies led the NY Blues over the Colorado Green Sox, 6-4.  Bob Gibson was responsible for 2 runs over eight innings and captured the win.
  • Closer Rafael Soriano plagued the Slam Dumps in ATB 13 and he does so again tonight, blowing the shutout, save, and win against the Gossamers.  With a runner on first, Soriano entered the game and gave up back to back singles, tying the game at 1-1.  Gold Country won in the 11th on a Wally Berger base hit.

O'Malley

  • The Red Eagles soared tonight, winning easily 13-1 over the Beau Brummels.  Jesse Burkett hit a grand slam and Ted Williams went 3-3 with a home run and 3 RBI.
  • Losing 6-3 at the end of 6 1/2, the Pinata Beaters broke through the Black Sox pen scoring 6 unanswered runs in a 9-6 win.  Oscar Charleston was the star, doubling, homering, and driving in 3.

Rickey

  • In a pitchers duel, the Death Speakers scored two in the 7th off a tiring Noodles Hahn, capturing a 2-1 victory over the Biscuits.  Bill Bernhard went 8 strong giving up just 3 hits in the win.
  • Despite pitching a complete game 2 hitter, Dave McNally and the Handbaskets lose to Fanclub 1-0.  McNally was brilliant, but had untimely bad luck in the 6th giving up a ground ball double to Jack Clark, who scored 1 out later on an Andy Van Slyke single.  The Handbaskets had the opportunity in the 9th and almost pulled off a 2-out rally.  Three singles in a row could have scored the game ting run, but Van Slyke again proved to much, gunning down Albert Pujols at the plate to end the game.
