The American League All Stars defeated the National League All Stars in an exciting 10-6 ball game that featured 28 hits, 5 of which were doubles and 2 of which were home runs. Good pitching was hard to come by, though relievers on both teams eventually kept the game from completely getting out of hand.
The NL struck first, scoring two runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings thanks to a terrible start from the AL pitcher, Curt Schilling. Ross Barnes led off the bottom of the first with a walk and Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig bookendeded the first out with doubles, plating two. The next inning Barnes returned with a single and an RBI and later scored on a Ted Williams rope to right as well. Schilling recorded only 4 outs.
Meanwhile, the AL squad scored five in the second, chasing NL starter Cy Blanton from the game. Barry Bonds led off with a homer to deep right and Arky Vaughan followed with a two run blast one out later. Before being chased form the game, Blanton, clearly rattled, then gave up a single to Fred Dunlap and a double to Frank Baker. Noodles Hahn relieved him, but yielded a two run single to Tris Speaker for the 5th AL run.
Hahn settled down and retired 7 of 11 before giving way to Sandy Koufax with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 4th. Koufax ended the threat by getting Jason Giambi to swing at a bad pitch, resulting in a force out at second.
For the AL, new ATB star Jerry Reuss had relieved Schilling, and gave up just 2 hit's in 3 and 2/3 innings before Willie Mitchell took over to start the 6th. The lefty struggled, giving up 2 runs on three hits and a walk.
By the time those runs crossed the plate however, the game was virtually out of hand as the AL scored three in 5th, and then lone runs in 6th and 7th as well. The American Leaguers recorded 18 hits and left 11 men on base.
