Week 2 Standings Summary
Each week I'll summarize the important happenings in either the American or National League, alternating back and forth as the season goes on. First up, the American.
The biggest news was in the AL East where two intra-division rivals faced off for the first time the season. The DC Chips and Bertrand Island Carnies enjoyed a 5-game home and home series, but "Enjoy" turned out to be a relative term however, as Bertrand Island completed a devastating 5-game sweep. Outscoring DC 26-6, the Carnies also went 12-1 on the week and now own the best record in ATB. While Ty Cobb and Fred Carroll where excellent, most of the credit goes to the Carnie pitching staff, their collective line was outstanding: 117 IP, 87 H, 64 K, 3 CG. Curt Schilling went 3-0, striking out 23 against just 5 walks. It is also important to note that DC was without starting center fielder Lip Pike, still out with injury, and lost Babe Ruth for the last three games of the series as well.
The Gold Country Gossamers also had a big week, going 8-5 and keeping relatively close to the division lead, just 2.5 games back. Future Highlight - early in Week 3, Gold Country and Bertrand Island have a 7 game home and home themselves, and we'll all know a lot more about quality of these teams soon.
For the most part, with the exception of the 3-10 Willets Point "Mechanics", the American League teams pounded each other into similar records within a game or two of .500 for the week. The "Mechanics" were swept by both the World Police and the Daffiness Boys and sit 7.5 games off the pace for the division and 5 games out of the Wild Card.
We must mention the Black Sox however. After a 4-10 start to the season, they went 7-6 and now stand just 1.5 games out of the wild card. Their heroes were Ron Santo (.959 OPS) and Walter Johnson (21 IP, 18 H, 17 K). As reported elsewhere, the Big Train is now a Handbasket pending an ongoing Trade Commission Review.
Finally, it's a good time to reiterate that each division will have it's own Wild card team this season, and the race in the AL West is extremely tight. All teams but the "Mechanics" are within 2 games of the playoffs at the moment.
