#8 – Helena Handbasket
Owner: Joe T
The Handbasket are a team that helps proves pitching is they key to ATB success. We’ve seen many teams that rate highly in offense and poorly in pitching, only to find themselves at the bottom of the standings in most resims. Helena changes this, with the 6th best team ERA but just the 18th rank OPS. Despite having a miserable team offense (though admittedly with 1 superstar) Helena made the playoffs and finish ranked 8th. You just can’t win with poor pitching.
How bad was the offense? 4 starters had OPS of .750 or higher, close to the league average. However, the bottom of the order featured four players with an OPS under .600 (Ozzie Smith, Gil McDougald, Buddy Bell, Ivan Rodriguez).
As is apparent below, they did feature one of the best bullpen’s in the league as well.
800 OPS Batters
Rd1 – Mickey Mantle: .294 / .375 / .505, 38 HR, 111 R, 129 RBI
Sub 4.00 ERA Starters
Rd10 – Derek Lowe: 12-11, 3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 203 IP
Rd15 – Teddy Higuera: 12-10, 3.88 ERA, 198 IP
Interestingly, Atlee Hammacker, Dave McNally, and Larry Dierker all had ERA’s between 4.07 and 4.24
Sub 3.25 ERA Relievers
Rd12 – Joe Nathan: 2.74 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 22 Sv
Rd6 – Tim Burke: 2.77 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 94 IP
Rd13 – Dennys Reyes: 3.11 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 19 Sv
Rd12 – Chris Hammond: 3.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 68 IP
Bust Draft Pick
Rd2 - Albert Pujols. Tough call here, Pujols is not a bad player but you need more offense out of a second round pick: .284 / .356 / .430, 21 HR, 100 RBI
Value Draft Pick
Rd30 – Willard Schmidt: 90 IP, 3.83 ERA, 1.46 WHIP
