For the second year in a row Allen C’s Downsouth Brews resim as the worst team in ATB. Pitching was their undoing as the team gave up 875 runs (2nd worst) and were outscored by an average of 155 (worst).
The Brews:
- Won 64 games in the regular season
- Averaged 64 wins in the resims
- Won 64 games in the “Opening Day” resim
At least they were consistent?
No starting pitcher had an ERA under 4.75 and only one reliever had an ERA under 4.00 (Tom Niedenfuer, 3.89). Their first round pick Randy Johnson was a disaster (see below) and the team never recovered.
Still, there are some positives. This was a couple of win improvement for Downsouth over last year and their offense was above average, scoring 720 runs, 12th in the league. Harry Heilmann and Dan Brouthers were spitting images of each other, each within a few points of AVG, OBP and SLG for a combined line of .288 / .348 / .444. Javy Lopez added 27 home runs and Howard Johnson 26. 3rd round pick and new Negro Leaguer George Carr was a bust (.276 OBP, though his SLG was close to .400).
The Brews maxed out with 75 wins and never came particularly close to reaching the playoffs. If everything broke correctly, and they achieved their best Runs For and best Runs Against in the same season, the “should have won” 86 games (Max Win Potential).
