Sim 1E Complete and Players of the Week

http://www.alltimebaseballsim.net/ATB19Reports/ATB19.htm

Batters of the Week
The 39-year Barry Bonds mesmerizes fans as much in this fantasy league as he did in real life.   DH'ing for the Critical Failures, Bonds was on fire in week 1, leading the American League in OBP, SLG, HR, R, RBI, OPS, and RC.

His line:
.375 / .500 / .850, 4 2B, 5 HR, 13 R, 11 RBI, 1.350 OPS, 17.1 RC27

The National League was a much tighter race with several all-time greats making case, but in the end we just can't ignore the 40 total bases that the Lakeview Zeros first basemen recorded.  He doesn't hit many home runs, but in week 1 Bill Terry smacked 28 hits, 7 of them of the extra-base variety.

His line:
.431 / .439 / .615, 3 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR, 11 R, 10 RBI, 1.055 OPS, 16.3 RC

Pitchers of the Week
For those keeping up with the blog it should be no surprise that Jason Schmidt, 3rd starter for Newport Beach, brings home week 1 honors.  Schmidt did all he could in two starts - both shutouts.

His line
2 GS, 0.00 ERA, 18 IP, 9 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 K, 0.61 WHIP

The National League was rife with excellent pitching performances - 40 qualifying pitchers had ERA's under 3.00 - but only Monty Stratton was so utterly dominant in so many innings.  Another right handed 3rd starter, this time for Spanish Harlem, Stratton made three starts and took credit with three wins.

His line:
3 GS, 0.36 ERA, 25 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K, 0.52 WHIP

So, How is Fielding Coming Along?

In 2019, Major League Baseball recorded a .984 fielding percentage on average.  No ATB team is all that close to that mark, but the KC Cobblers and Willets Point "Mechanics" are at least .975 or better.

At the other end of the spectrum, very far down the list, are the Dayton Toppins and Inglorious Batters who both clock in at .942.  To put this in perspective, the Cobblers are on pace to make 162 errors this season, or about 1 every game; conversely, the Batters, with their current pace would fumble the ball 383 times, or about 2.6 errors each game.

Here are the projected totals for each team:

162 Errors - Willets Point "Mechanics"
176 Errors - Kansas City Cobblers
177 Errors - Newport Beach Cole Trains
178 Errors - Critical Failures
191 Errors - Lady Evelyn Walleyes
191 Errors - Birmingham Cloverleafs
206 Errors - Planet 10 Lectroids
216 Errors - Cleveland Spiders
221 Errors - Ohio N95ers
230 Errors - Lakeview Zeros
236 Errors - Downsouth Brews
252 Errors - Back Bay Bivalves
259 Errors - Manetheren Red Eagles
259 Errors - Springfield Isotopes
275 Errors - Spanish Harlem Pinata Beaters
280 Errors - Grumman Hellcats
288 Errors - Wynnewood Tiger Kings
292 Errors - Fox City Foxes
308 Errors - Shamokin Miners
339 Errors - New Amsterdam Highlanders
373 Errors - Otterville Valley Otters
378 Errors - Chattanooga Lookouts
378 Errors - Dayton Toppins
383 Errors - Inglorious Batters

On other horrific stat to pass along, at least if you are Michael and Zach, owners of Lady Evelyn - their catching tandem of Victor Martinez and Joe Mauer are historically poor at throwing out base runners.  These Walleyes may not have the worst thrown-out percentage in the league (though it's close), but for some reason teams are clearly picking on them in attempts:

Failures Making Most of Their Player Creations

Nine new players were drafted in the top-100 this year and most have been downright awful.  It does seem that the Critical Failures cracked the code though, they've had great success with there two starters...

45 - JVerlander (CF, 2019) - 3 GS,  1.78 ERA, 1.19 WHIP
71 - JdeGrom (SI, 2018)    - Injured early in 1st Start

82 - GCole (LEW, 2019)     - 3 GS, 10.13 ERA, 2.13 WHIP

Sim 1D Complete and a 21 inning affair

http://www.alltimebaseballsim.net/ATB19Reports/ATB19.htm

Tonight's slate of games is highlighted by this magnificent 21 inning contest which saw Lady Evelyn take down the Cobblers 5-3.  Some stats;

  • 588 pitches thrown
  • 31 position players used
  • 17 pitchers used
  • 10 pinch hitters used
  • 1 top of the 9th triple by Sammy Sosa to give the Walleye's a lead
  • 1 bottom of the 9th home run by Albert Pujols to send the game to extra innings
  • 1 Jeff Kent Home run to win it.

Ohio is Thankful For Turkey and other Sim Notes

Turkey Stearnes, the Ohio DH and occasional corner outfielder can rake and this is no surprise - he was after all drafted 13th overall.  However, in previous ATB seasons he has become known as a streaky hitter with moderate spells of below average play followed by power surges that can single handedly carry a team.  His success this season has been the opposite - he's gotten a hit in every game, the only ATB'er to make that claim,.  And while he has been driving in runs, the power is not quite there yet and Stearnes remains homerless through 9 games.  The power will come, and  when it does, Turkey may be on the road to MVP.

Eastward in Newport Beach, club skipper Lou Pinella could care less about Thanksgiving turkey, he is just thankful for #3 starter, Jason Schmidt.  The right hander has been stellar - 2 starts, 2 shutouts, 2 wins:  18 IP, 9 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 12 K.  Schmidt takes the mount tonight against a struggling Miners team that is desperate for a win.

Over the in National League, Lakeview has frankly been in awe of Roberto Clemente.  We've become accustomed to his stellar fielding in the outfield, but this season he is also off to a tremendous start at the plate, batting .457 / .475 / .743 in 9 games.

And finally we need to talk about Spanish Harlem who finds their team just 1 game over .500 despite a team ERA of 1.55.  On the entire staff, including starters and relievers, only Kevin Millwood has an ERA above 3.00 and he has no losses to his name.  So, what's going on?  Nothing out of ordinary in truth.   The Beaters are 3rd in the league in runs per game and just ran into a little bad luck in two of their last three games, losing 1-0 to Walter Johnson and the Toppins, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Roger Clemens and the Isotopes.  It's early, the wins should come.

3 Great Opening Sim Performances

Reggie Jackson, Springfield Isotopes
Springfield's right fielder, Reggie Jackson, tried to put the team on his shoulders by driving in all 6 of his teams runs thanks to home runs in both the 7th and 8th innings.  Kevin Appier, the Brews starter, was cruising when Jackson connected with his first shot on a 1-2 fastball that was quickly deposited down the right field line.

One inning later, Appier was in in serious trouble, and faced Jackson once again after loading the bases on a single, double, an walk.  The first pitch of the at-bat, and 123rd overall was crushed well over the the right center field wall

But the damage had already been done, the Brews lineup chased Roger Clemens by the 4th, scoring 8 against the Rocket and the Isotopes bullpen.

Barry Bonds, Critical Failures
On Opening Day, the Failures outlasted the Highlanders 6-1 in an exciting extra inning game that was much closer than the score would indicate.  Barry Bonds, the Failures left fielder, started the season off hot collecting 11 total bases in the victory.  The #3 overall draft pick homered in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, singled in the 8th, and broke the game open in the top of the 10th.

Tied at 1-1 heading into extra innings, Derek Jeter and Jesse Burkett roped back to back singles off of Randy Johnson, who was still in the game despite a pitch count in the 130s.   With a rested pen, manager Casey Stengel stuck with the Big Unit and it burned him to the tune of a 3-run bomb and game winning home run.

Joe Wood, Lakeview Zeros
The best pitching performance of the sim came from Smokin' Joe Wood who propelled his Zero's to 3-0 thanks to a 4-hit, 10-k shutout.  The Inglorious Batters never had a chance and only had two runners advanced into scoring position on the night.  Joey Votto struck out 3-times but did gather a single as well.  Wood's final line:  9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K, 132 pitches.

Injuries

A reminder to check the Injury Log or Current Injuries Reports - already we've seen Springfield's Jacob DeGrom go down for 18 days, plus Greg Maddux missed a start and George Brett lost time as well.

New line-ups are submitted weekly, however, you are allowed to make changes mid-sim to account for an injury.

Note: FA pickups are weekly only, no mid sim acquisitions.

Introducing the Ohio N95ers

“This is Chris Berman. Let's introduce the N95ers lineup: Leading off will be Sam Jethroe “Bodine.” Let's hope he doesn't hit like Granny or Uncle Jed. After that is the Stormin' Mormon, Bryce Harper “Valley PTA.” After the number three hitter, Joe Morgan is the N95ers' number one pick, Turkey “On Rye” Stearnes, who can really bash, and that's no baloney,” Berman says.

“In keeping with the longstanding American cultural stereotype that all Italians are somehow connected with organized crime, the theme from “The Godfather” will be the walk-up music for number five hitter Phil Cavarretta. The Fivers will employ a platoon of Bill Joyce and Melvin “For A Few Dollars” Mora in the sixth slot. Speedster Rickey Henderson will bat seventh, followed by another platoon featuring catchers Johnny “Small Mouth” Bassler and Brian Downing “Abbey.” In the ninth hole will be Jack Glass...” Berman starts giggling uncontrollably. “Ninth hole...Glassco...oh man!” The assembled beat writers engage in what can best be described as a group "Beavis and Butt-head" laugh.

Annoyed, Fivers manager Ray Kinsella yells, “Grow the ---- up, people. JACK GLASSCOCK. His name is Glasscock. So what? Do you realize how many people named Willie and Peter and Dick have played professional baseball? Do you know there have been more than 150 Johnsons in MLB history, as well as a few Wangs? Are any of you smart alecks familiar with Snodgrass's Muff or Merkle's Boner? AND WHAT ABOUT RUSTY KUNTZ? HMM? I gave up an easy country life farming and coaching dead ballplayers in an Iowa cornfield for this?”

It should be an interesting season.

Dayton Toppins Press Release

DAYTON, OH:  Earlier this morning General Manager of the Dayton Toppins, Joe V, stepped to the podium to introduce his manager, Anthony Grant.  Grant, known for his prowess in NCAA basketball, especially this past season where he put together the greatest team and season in University of Dayton history, is switching sports but vowed to bring with him the same approach.  "What works in one sport, works in them all," said Grant in his stoic style, "Defense, balance, and limiting mistakes.  That's what its about.  Do those things and you will win.  Don't, and it'll be a long season in any sport, from Basketball, to baseball, to whiffle ball."

Joe V and Grant assembled a squad they hope is designed to do just that.  Made up of solid defenders across the diamond, but no one with an ATB career average over .300, and all with good career ATB OBP.  The team also selected four straight pitchers to start the draft and plays in the hitter's desert 1906 Washington Stadium, where all manner of hits are hard to find.  "The field plays to our men's strengths, and with the Big Train leading the way, we hope to ride our horses to the division title," Grant said.  The hope is the offense can be led by the top of the order getting on base, and Gabby Hartnett knocking them in.

Joe V feels confident in his squad's capability, "Clearly, we will set some records.  They could be for least amount of runs scored, or most shutouts, but we will be fun to watch."  Grant, however, exuded confidence in his ability to get the most out of his team and believes they will win a lot of one run games.  The exhibition season aside, where the team managed a 6-16 record, Grant believes the time for coaching and meticulous management of his team's talents will win out.  "In the exhibition season we were just operating at a regular pace, no adjustments, to see what we have.  Now that we know that, we will adjust our approach by player to maximize our efficiency," In the audience at the University of Dayton Arena, Commissioner Lou Poulas appeared to put his head in his hands and audibly groaned at hearing the phrase "adjust our approach by player."

Grant said.  Known for his intelligent and intense approach, Joe V hopes Grant can do for the Toppins what he did for Obi Toppin.  Time will tell in the NL West, where only one team in the Exhibition season played to .500 ball (Brian B at 11-10).  Play Ball!

Effect of Playing in 1906 National League - Error Rates

As you hopefully know, we randomly chose 1906 as the era to play in for this season. Many of us on the message board were lamenting our poor defenses in the exhibitions and we found out why - the era.

Here are the errors per 100 games for each position, 1st figure is our classic ATB era, 2nd is 1906

P: 10 vs 20 C: 9 vs 21 1b: 9 vs 20 2B: 15 vs 30 3B: 15 vs 27 ss: 21 vs 49! OF: 5 vs 10

In a nutshell, errors will at least double this year at every position

Playing Fielders Out of Position

This came up on the draft board today and since i no longer have the "How DMB Works" pages I thought it would help to post this here.  This is from the DMB help file...

Playing out of position

You can use a player at a defensive position for which he is not rated, but his performance will suffer. How much? It depends.

Players can make a relatively painless transition to an easier position that is similar to one they're already rated for. The penalties are much greater for moving to a very different position that is also more difficult to play.

For example, a CF can play LF or RF without suffering. Both positions are similar and easier than the one he's rated for. A LF or RF moving to CF has a more difficult time because there's more ground to cover. Similarly, a move from SS to 2B won't cost you too much, while a move from 2B to SS will hurt more. And the moves that will hurt the most are (a) from any position to catcher, (b) a catcher moving to any position except 1B, and (c) a 1B moving to CF or another infield position.

How will these penalties show up? In lots of ways. More balls in their zones will go for hits. They'll make more errors. Guys without outfielder throwing or catcher throwing ratings will be easier to run on. Unrated catchers will have more passed balls. Unrated middle infielders won't start as many double plays on balls hit to them, and they won't turn two as often when they're the pivot man on the play.

You might ask why we don't improve ratings when a player is moving to a less difficult position. Couldn't a top-rated SS play 2B even better than the average 2B? In the many years that we've been assigning fielding ratings, we've seen a lot of players get better ratings when they make the transition from a harder position to an easier one (especially SS -> 2B, 3B -> 1B, and CF -> LF), but we've also seen plenty of cases where the player needed some time to learn how to play the new position.

Every position requires of a different set of skills. A CF moving to RF needs to learn how to play the caroms on balls hit down in the corner. A 3B needs great reflexes to handle the hot smashes that come his way, and that might not be the strong suit of a middle infielder moving to 3B. A SS moving to 2B must learn how to make the pivot with his back to the runner.

If our out-of-position adjustments assumed that every player could instantly adapt to a new position, even an easier one, we think it would create too many opportunities for managers to abuse the game by moving players around in ways that real-life managers would never get away with. So the game imposes penalties of varying degrees on all but a very few out-of-position players.  The exceptions are (a) center fielders moving to a corner outfield spot, who do not suffer a range penalty or a change in their error rate, and (b) shortstops moving to other infield positions, who don't suffer a range penalty but are given an error-rate penalty.

Our first box score in 1,432 days, glad you are aboard gentlemen!

Exhibitions are non game impacting test games for our enjoyment only.  Completely run by the computer AI and they will have no effect on the regular season.  They will be haphazard at first as teams begin to round out a lineup, but once all teams have enough lineups slots filled I'll run them in batches.

Two teams are ready - Jason B vs Allen C.
