I don’t have a whole lot to add to this ranking as the numbers speak for the themselves. All 5 starters make the Sub 4.00 ERA Club, 4 different relievers make the sub 3.25 ERA Club, and they led the league in runs scored. The Death Speakers made the playoffs each season and won an incredible 16 division titles. Their max win potential was the highest at 124 as well as the 116 mark for most wins in any resim.

Quite simply, they dominated on offense, defense, and pitching to the tune of an average of 103 wins per season. The bested the 100 win mark an inconceivable 80% of the time.

One item that Mike may have set a new trend with is on-base percentage. His team ISO was 2nd to worst in the league, and was expected to be a deterrent to run scoring. Take a look at the chart below, depicting team rank in ISO and runs scored – see if you can tell which team doesn’t belong

The key to their success was their team .385 on base percentage. Only one starter had a mark below .365 and four of them scored better than .380. It will be interesting to see if this effects draft strategy next season, with owners passing by some early round power guys like Ken Griffey Jr (Rd5 - .306 OBP, 33 HR) for the likes of Edgar Martinez (9th Round, .302 / .380 . 424)

Our world champions check in at #2 overall. This was a great team that was Top 5 in both pitching and batting. The Black Diamonds averaged 96 wins per season, made the playoffs 18 of 20 times, and won the second most division titles in all the re-sims at 9.

Barry Bonds led the offense with impressive stats - .413 OBP, an average of 63 (!) HR per year, and 157 RBI. Lady Baldwin is now the best strikeout man in the league, averaging 342 per season while three relievers had ERA’s in the two’s.

This team had no weaknesses, they just weren’t as good as our #1.

Resim Power Alley - #4, DC Chips

#4 – DC Chips

Four teams remain to vie for the #1 ranked resimmer. In alphabetical order: DC Chips, Dumai’s Wells Oathbinders, Lusitiania Death Speakers, and the Sonoran Black Diamonds. Three of them advanced to the League Championship round, a number right about where you would expect in any given season.

Coming in at #4 are the DC Chips. We previously saw a natural divide between the 12th and 11th ranked teams, which were separated by 6 wins (77 vs 83). A similar divide now separates the 4th and 5th ranked teams. The Chps averaged 95 wins, five more than Fanclub, enough of a variance to know they were squarely the better club.

It’s obvious this was one of the elite teams – 95 average wins, a +142 RD, 8 seasons of 100 or morewins, a .900 OPS batter, and several great pitchers. One number that sticks out is 114 resim wins – not Max Win potential, but the actual number of wins recorded in one of the resims. Incredible. What exactly went right?

On offense, Tip O’Neill was his usual great self with a .935 OPS and 73 extra base hits. Eddie Mathews was also about average with 35 HR and a .815 OPS. The three biggest differences were Arky Vaughan who batted .319 / .410 / .445, Johnny Mize with an .800 OPS, and Jack Clark’s 35 homers.

Their rotation was top notch:
Braxton: 23-7, 3.50 ERA
Sanders: 19-10, 3.36 ERA
Conway: 12-4, 3.72 ERA
Scott: 17-12, 4.27 ERA

But their pen was the key to it all:

Mike Jackson: 7-1, 3.14 ERA, 52 IP

Interestingly, Killen is listed as a bust down below, and deservedly so. He averaged a 4.72 ERA over the 20 sims, had 4 seasons in the 5.00’s, and even had one season with a 6.46 ERA in 141 IP. This season however, he excelled, and it was his only time with an ERA under 3.50 and just the third time under 4.00

The first thing that struck me in compliing the Fanclub data was how much their starting pitching over performed in the regular season. It ended up not impacting their win total when compared with the re-sims, but this kind of discrepancy in ERA’s is hard not to notice:

¾ of the rotation was much better in ATB XII then the resim’s. Earnshaw bested his “baseline” ERA 0.81 while Hughson came in a full run better, and Cooper an astounding run and a half better.

On offense, only Norm Cash was a very good hitter. 5 regulars had OPS scores of .702 or worse, odd for a Top-5 caliber team, and all the more reason pitching was their key to success. This was somewhat intentional, as Jason paid a premium for defense for the sake of offense.

The first round upset winner over the Lusitania Death Speakers, this 6th rating only works to further prove that the Puff victory was in fact an upset. Not to say this wasn’t a very good team, it certainly was. They had winning seasons in 18 of the 20 resims, featured a balanced attack on both offense and pitching, and was our our first team to never fall below 80 wins.

Their lineup was marked with 9 above average players, none of whom fell below a .700 OPS. One can’t help but wonder how good the offense could have been with a thumper. Brad’s first 5 picks were all batters, but picking 19th, all the great batters were long off the draft board.

The leader of the pitching staff as 29th rounder Scott Stratton, and he was sorely needed. The rest of the rotation averaged a 4.72 ERA leaving a lot of work for the bullpen. The relievers were up to the task however, and aside from the two greats listed below, four others had ERA’s uner 3.65.
