20 Resims: #22 - dogphin29

At the end of each season owners may submit a new lineup that is used in the 20 Resim competition.  This competition is purely for speculation and is used as a gauge to determine who had the best draft.  The true ATB champion remains the World Series winner.

20 seasons are automatically simulated and compiled.  No lineup changes are allowed and injuries are turned off.  Through a formula that considers Win-Loss record, Playoff Appearances, and Pythagorean Record the teams are ranked in order from worst to first.

Special thanks to Justin B who provided the formula and methodology behind the raw park OPS values, which provides a new way to interpret park factors.

Selecting Randy Johnson and Christy Mathewson with their top 2 draft picks, Dogphin29 attempted to construct a strong pitching squad but ultimately chose historically great, as opposed to ATB great, starting pitchers.  This is a common mistake among first year owners.  By all means one can win with a pitching first team but you need one of the few ATB stars to accomplish the trick.  Here, the wrong Johnson year was used and the lefty ended up with a 1.55 WHIP.  Mathewson finished with a 4.41 ERA.

Still, with a 4.30 team ERA they were respectable in most contests. Brandon Webb (see below) was a nice surprise and the bullpen featured Ellis Kinder (3.28 ERA) and two other moderately successful relievers in Tom House (136 IP, 3.78 ERA) and Doug Brocail (3.77 ERA).

The real issue for dogphin29 was the lineup.  Scoring just 628 runs, the team was ranked 2nd to last.  Only 1 full time starter, Jim Thome, has an OPS over .700.  Left handed platooners Spud Johnson (.704 OPS) and Jack Fournier (.411 SLG) were respectable.

Next season we’d like to see what Paul O’Neill can do with more playing time.  The hot tempered right fielder batted .281 / .342 / .378 in 76 AB per season (1,520 overall at bats), third highest on the squad but had virtually no playing time.
