"Crossed" Up

Backup HOWARYA catcher Lave Cross, who has played 27 innings at catcher, has an astounding 8 passed balls on the season! In season of record 1894, Cross did catch, but only in 14 games, therefore he is not rated to catch in ATB.

On April 20, he allowed four in a game until he was finally replaced by usual starter Yogi Berra. Fortunately, Kevin Brown was the starter, so there was no chance of victory.

On April 28 he allowed one which scored a run in a game that went to extra innings, but HOWARYA won it in 12, after again inserting Berra in the 9th.

On May 12, he played the entire game and allowed two passed balls, both of which led to runs. Pete Hill scored on the first, and the other put Eddie Mathews on third, who scored on a Darrell Porter sac fly.

In real life, Cross was quite adept with his catcher's mitt. From Wikipedia: Major league rules did not restrict the size of infielders' gloves, and he continued to use his catcher's mitt in the field; on August 5, 1897 he set a still-standing record at second base with 15 assists in a 12-inning game.

  1. Whoops, have a feeling HOWARYA didn't realize Cross isn't catcher eligible!
